A First Yesterday...,

I've a bird feeder at the back of my deck, often have as many as two dozen dining, and have clearly identified about eight or nine species.
Yesterday it had just been refilled and I was adjusting it.
A hungry/impatient Downey Woodpecker decided that I was not a threat, came onto the feeder, grabbed a few seeds, and then flitted off to a nearby bush.
While he was on the feeder, we were eye to eye and about eighteen inches apart.
Other than pigeons/ducks/geese that mooch lunch crumbs, that's the closest that I've ever been to a wild one.

Today we added a species to the count. For about five minutes I saw my first grackle of the season.
